In 1998, as a result of selective breeding work by scientists and specialists of Kazakhstan, the Mugalzhar horse breed was developed based on purebred breeding and improvement of Kazakh horses of the Jabe type. Mugalzhar horses differ from the general population of Kazakh horses by having a higher live weight and relatively larger body measurements. During the formation of the breed, for the first time in the history of domestic herd horse breeding and zootechnical practice, the scientist and horse breeder S. Rzabayev created and approved through the USSR Ministry the highly productive stud lines of the stallions Zubr and Barkhat, which have no analogues in the world. Compared to Kazakh horses of the Jabe type, Mugalzhar horses have larger body measurements and higher live weight: stallions have measurements of 145-153-185-20.0 cm and weigh 520 kg; mares – 143-151-182-19.5 cm and weigh 490 kg. The Mugalzhar breed is distinguished by massiveness, harmonious conformation, strong constitution, sufficient bone structure, correct leg structure, and excellent coat growth — all of which are key exterior qualities.
In the process of improving the breed, several highly productive types and stud lines were created, including the Irtysh stud type and the Zaman and Bakai lines.
