The article considers the debate technology as a form of development of communication skills during literary reading lessons. The relevance of the study stems from the rapid advancement of scientific and technological progress, which brings about transformations across all spheres of human activity and underscores the necessity of cultivating transferable, supra-professional competencies among future professionals. That is, modern educational institutions are expected to cultivate individuals, whose personal qualities enable them to adapt to rapidly changing global conditions and to participate actively in a democratic society, fully realizing their potential within it. In order to complete this task, it is required to reconsider the approach to the organization of the educational process. This necessitates a shift from conventional approaches—primarily the verbal transmission of information—to a system-activity approach that is personality-oriented and developmental in nature, placing emphasis on students' independent activity. One of the effective pedagogical technologies addressing this challenge is the use of debate as an instructional method. The debate technology is not only an interesting game, but also an effective tool of developing the cognitive activity in students. Debates develop critical thinking, communication skills, eloquence and persuasion skills, analytical abilities of students, in other words, debates develop exactly those qualities that are necessary and in demand in modern society.
