Abstract

This article examines the importance of teaching chemistry in higher education institutions based on the sustainable development principles. The education system plays a key role in the implementation of sustainable development ideas. In this context, the application of methodological approaches aimed at fostering ecological and social responsibility in the chemistry teaching process is considered highly relevant. Modern education focuses not only on theoretical knowledge but also on the development of students environmental awareness, scientific and cognitive competencies, and social responsibility. Integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the chemistry curriculum increases students' interest in global issues and enhances their critical and systemic thinking skills. The study was conducted at the Department of Chemistry of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University and was implemented as a pedagogical experiment. The research involved second-year students majoring in chemistry. The educational process included interactive teaching methods, chemical modeling project-based learning, and interdisciplinary connections. To evaluate the effectiveness of the methodology, surveys, observation, theoretical analysis and practical tasks were used. As a result of the study, students aligned their scientific projects with the Sustainable Development Goals and proposed creative solutions to pressing ecological and social issues. They successfully defended their projects and achieved scientifically grounded outcomes. This not only increased their engagement and interest in the subject but also positively influenced the development of their research skills. The proposed methodology enriches the content of the educational process and serves as an effective pedagogical tool for the comprehensive development of future professionals.
