The relevance of this study stems from the need to comprehensively assess academic mobility in Kazakhstan as a strategic driver for modernizing higher education and strengthening its integration into the global educational space. The aim is to analyze the current state, key trends, barriers, and future prospects of outbound, inbound, and virtual academic mobility. The objectives include examining the regulatory and institutional framework, assessing quantitative and qualitative indicators, identifying educational, research, and cultural impacts, revealing constraints, and developing recommendations. The methodology is based on a mixed-methods approach: ENIC, OECD, and EHEA quantitative statistics analysis; qualitative research (25 student interviews, 12 administrative staff interviews, and 4 focus groups); content and comparative analysis. Findings indicate that academic mobility positively influences students’ academic performance, research activity, and intercultural competencies, yet regional disparities, language and financial barriers, and insufficient post-programme integration persist. The scientific novelty lies in providing a holistic evaluation of academic mobility as a factor in sustainable development and proposing a multi-level model for its institutionalization. The practical significance is reflected in the applicability of the recommendations to enhance academic mobility policy at national and institutional levels and to increase the international competitiveness of Kazakhstani universities.
